broadcasted a live radio program to discuss the role of municipalities in the
development of the local community" on Wednesday, February 24, 2010
attended by the Mayor of Maghazi, Mr. Mohammed Al Najar, and a researcher in
the civil society issues, Mr. Imad Mohsen. Mr. Al-Najar pointed out that in the
present era and with growing concepts of integrity and transparency, the local
community means a civil institutions, men of thought and freedom of constructive
criticism. On his part, he indicated that the municipality contribute to the
process of development in spite of the weakness of the available possibilities
and conditions due to the blockade affects the Palestinian community, referring
to municipality ambitious to contribute to greater and better progress if the
situation improves. On the other hand, he called to increase the level of
community participation effectively to achieve a civil society. In this regard,
Mr. Najar pointed out that the municipality's core work, under the current
circumstances, is focused on basic services and confirmed that behavior
modification is the process of human development that contributes to the
development.
In the same context, the
researcher Mr. Mohsen emphasized that the municipalities need to become a real
local government, in which the municipal council would be closer to the
government that runs the basic services, education, health and social care,
security, water, electricity and housing, and not simply the work of cleaning
and paving streets, and be with its own resources and adequate
allocation. Furthermore,
he referred that the contribution of the municipalities in the development will
be double, especially as it deals with the public at large sustainably. He also
assisted that to make the municipality developmental
unit, it must be entrusted with the role of the broad cultural; such culture
play an important role for the betterment of communities
At
the end of the meeting, Mr. / Al Najar mentioned a number of obstacles and difficulties which
stand against the development process, including a lack of financial resources,
the failure of the citizen in the payment of receivables, negative behaviors
practiced by the citizens and the lack of initiatives. Mr. Mohsen added that
the occupation and siege, poverty and unemployment are the reasons hindering
the development process and stressed that the municipality need to look for
projects for sustainable development. |
