SVF held a public meeting in cooperation with "Women's Activity Center at Deir Al.Balah" on Thursday, May 6, 2010 on " Divorce and its psychological impacts on women ", participated by many women and social activists. The psychologist Mrs. Mona Abu Jari - Women's Activity Center at Breij- was the speaker of the meeting. Mrs. Abu Jari indicated divorce phenomenon raised recently; divorce average registered a high ratio compared to previous years in the Palestinian territories despite being the lowest one in the Arab countries.
The lecturer outlined the variant reasons that cause divorce, which usually accompanied by external intervention by the family; the early marriage, the age disparity of the spouses, the different educational, social or economic level of both, the sexual inability of one of them and the impact of the prevailing social traditions; the traditional way of marriage or choosing the partner makes spouses inadaptable with each other especially if the couple were forced to live within the family as a result of the inability of the husband to provide an independent housing. All of that reasons contribute largely to definite separation as the deteriorated political, social, security and economical situations sweeping the Palestinian territories lead to break the family up.
On the other hand, divorce restricts women freedom and energy and allows domestic and community violence to be practiced upon them due to the absence of legal and social protection; divorce is a passive option for its destructive effects on children and community.
